COURSE DESCRIPTION

This workshop begins by investigating two foundational human traits: relentless anxiety and the pursuit of wisdom. Anxiety because it is in part the age we live in — Wisdom because it is humankind’s pearl of great price and hope. From our earliest years Westerners have been conditioned by, and drawn into a precarious world of anxiety — seemingly central to our societal fabric. Key questions we must consider are as follows: why is this state of anxiousness so prevalent?; what are the contributing forces behind it?; where do these forces come from?; “how do these forces operate (influence)?; and how, based on the effects of anxiety, can we find practical tools to assist us in overcoming a recurrent ‘fractured state of being’?

As a research based course students will have ample opportunity to deepen their understanding of the causes and effects of living an anxiety prone existence. Logically, this process will lead them on a hot pursuit of ideas and insights (past and present ) from history’s wisest men and women. This “well of wisdom” will be drawn from the disciplines of philosophy, theology, poetry, sociology and psychology. The goal of the course is for each student to take with them newly acquired tools/insights they can apply to their present day lives.

The course will include use of reading materials by experts in their perspective fields, lecture, collaborative dialoguing (at times pretty open- ended), and guest speakers.
