Poet, activist and men's work pioneer Robert Bly died on November 21 at the age of 94. This is part one in a series of conversations with some of the people who knew him intimately.
Martin Shaw is an acclaimed teacher of myth and author of numerous books including his latest, Smoke Hole: Looking to the Wild in the Time of the Spyglass. He founded the Oral Tradition and Mythic Life courses at Stanford University, and is director of the Westcountry School of Myth in the UK.
He has introduced thousands of people to mythology and how it penetrates modern life. For twenty years Shaw has been a wilderness rites of passage guide, working with at-risk youth, those who are unwell, returning veterans as well as many women and men seeking a deeper life.

ABOUT BRIAN JAMES: I’m an advocate for soul.
I help individuals lead more authentically soulful lives through heart-to-heart conversations and mentorship.
I tend to the world soul through my ritual practice, art, music, writing, podcasts and community circles.
I provide compassionate and non-judgmental support for adults young and old who are seeking greater wholeness, freedom, authenticity and direction in their life.
Life is a journey full of challenges (and the occasional crisis), and there are times when each of us needs support.
I meet people when they’re facing obstacles, stuck in old patterns and stories, or when they’re at a crossroads in their life, unsure of which direction to take.
People often find me after working with more conventional psychotherapists or counsellors. They usually say, “I’m tired of telling my story over and over” “I’m sick of talking about my childhood” and “I’ve spent years in therapy but haven’t experienced any real changes.”
Real, lasting transformation requires more than just getting our story straight. It asks that we become the author of our story.
There is a vast well of untapped wisdom, inspiration and creativity inside each of us. We just have to ask the right questions to break free of limiting patterns and beliefs, and learn how to listen to what our body and soul are already and always telling us.
The path is the goal.
Our true path is a journey that requires us to take responsibility for our life — to grow up and show up.
Because everyone is born with unique gifts and soul’s purpose, our true path is uncharted territory. It opens up before us each day if we choose to step up, face the challenges life presents us, and follow our soul’s calling with courage and consistency.
Every decision we make takes us one step forward on our path. So how do we know we’re headed in the right direction?
Through compassionate inquiry, somatic experiencing, dreamwork and soul-tending, I help clients connect to their inner guidance system (aka heart and soul) so they’re better able to make choices that are aligned with their authentic self rather than old stories, fears and limiting beliefs.
Together, we can work to cultivate greater awareness and understanding of one’s self, others and the world in order to live a life that is more authentic, meaningful and interesting.
