“Maddie” by Keith Basar

When I thought I’d never again share space with your kind

miraculously, there you were.

You made pleasing your pack (our family) a selfless mission.

And my God, that glowing, feminine, molasses pie face of yours

could light up the darkest of days

So often you made my heart soar, like a hawk dancing the night sky.

Guess that’s what dogs do to us humans,

but you, sweet girl, took it to uncharted places.

You were masterful at dog school

healing and recalling, like a DNA imprint.

And when you took first place in healing competition

your onlookers must of whispered,

“isn’t she something, look how she prances and whirls through the ring.”

I’ll always remember those special days.

You were the best darn Chuckit ball fetcher I’d ever seen.

Maybe not as powerful as your bigger sisters,

but determined to play the game with sheer voracity!

And I must add, always dropping that little orange ball at my feet

ready to go one more round.

A snuggler by design,

you always figured a way to squeeze between those hefty, domineering sisters of yours,

to gain the affection you so rightfully deserved.

Maddie, I will eternally miss you,

your kind gaze, your watchdoggieness,

your “putting Stella in her place”

and your immense loyalty.

You are my one in a million girl,

and a wonder to my life.

From the deepest, aching part of me I say “so long.”

And know you are my most remarkable Maddie girl.

Thank you for gracing my life.
